FDOT Asphalt Paving Level 2 Practice Exam

The purpose of using a compactor during asphalt pavement installation is to ensure proper material bonding and density. Compaction is a critical step in the asphalt paving process as it helps achieve the desired mechanical properties of the asphalt mix. When asphalt is compacted, air voids within the mixture are minimized, enhancing the binding of the asphalt binder to the aggregates. This leads to improved strength, stability, and durability of the pavement.

A well-compacted asphalt surface also promotes better load distribution, reducing the likelihood of premature wear and rutting. Proper density is essential for resisting deformation under traffic loads and environmental conditions, which ultimately extends the lifespan of the pavement. Therefore, effective compaction is vital for achieving a high-quality, long-lasting asphalt pavement.
